The bigger the group, the more important it is to keep clothing similar. Keep some part of the clothing similar in everyone's outfit (i.e. use the same color in pants and skirts and vary the color in shirts or use the same style of shirt in different colors). Solids (even if you mix different colors) keep the attention on faces. If you use a print, either repeating the same print or repeating one color from the print will keep the focus of the portrait on faces.
